ABOUT THE EVENT

The People’s Climate Mandate Townhall

Join us for The People’s Climate Mandate Townhall, a community conversation about Winnipeg’s climate future.

As the municipal election approaches, we have an opportunity to shape the priorities that matter most to our communities: stronger climate resilience, cleaner transportation, affordable energy, waste reduction, local food, greener neighbourhoods, and more inclusive decision-making.

This townhall will begin with a short welcome and an overview of how the City works, followed by facilitated group discussions on key climate issues. Participants will then share back the strongest ideas from each table and vote on the solutions they want to see prioritized.

Opening remarks will feature Dr. Richard Milgrom of the Department of City Planning, University of Manitoba, with an introduction to how municipal decision-making works and where public input can make a difference.

Participants will then join one of several facilitated discussion tables focused on the following topics:

  • Adaptation: preparing for climate impacts.

  • Active transportation: making it easier and safer to cycle and walk.

  • Transit: making bus service more convenient and affordable.

  • Buildings & energy: supporting clean energy and better home and building efficiency.

  • Waste: reducing waste.

  • Food: improving access to locally grown food and supporting home growing.

  • Trees & green space: protecting and expanding public green space and the urban forest.

  • Participation & transparency: making it easier to take part in city decision-making and be heard.

What to expect

After the group discussions, we will come together for a shareback of the top ideas from each table, followed by a vote on the solutions that participants feel are most important for Winnipeg’s climate future.

The evening will conclude with next steps and a look at how this input will help inform the People’s Climate Mandate for Winnipeg 2026.
