The Climate Reality Leadership Corps was born from the simple belief that everyday people could lead the fight on climate and together change the world.
The program started back in 2006, when 50 aspiring advocates joined Nobel Laureate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore at his barn in Nashville, Tennessee to learn how to share the truth about the climate crisis, just as he had in the Academy Award-winning film "An Inconvenient Truth." Between September 2006 and April 2007, Mr. Gore held several training sessions in the United States. It was during this time that Mr. Gore met his original target of training 1,000 Americans, with a small contingent of 21 Canadians in the mix.
Upon their return to Canada, these initial trainees were met with an ever-growing demand for presentations. In May 2007, five of the original Canadian Climate Leaders (René Brunet, Peter Corbyn, Mike Gerbis, Shelley Kath, and Désirée McGraw) co-founded the Canadian organization. They had a goal of bringing Mr. Gore to Canada in order to train hundreds more Canadians within a year. Their ambition marked the beginning of a national leadership movement committed to turning climate knowledge into community action.
