Al Gore to Host Climate Reality Project's First-Ever Global Climate Activist Online Training

· Press Releases

Washington, DC (May 28, 2020) – Former US Vice President Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project will host the first-ever Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Training from July 18-26, 2020. The training will be entirely online, including live, prescheduled, and on-demand sessions, allowing attendees from around the world to take part.

Led by Climate Reality’s founder and chairman, former Vice President Gore, the training will bring together attendees to learn practical skills for effectively driving climate action and contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive movement for solutions – even during this time of social distancing.

“The COVID-19 pandemic gives us a sobering picture of what failing to prepare for, and properly respond to, the climate crisis looks like: massive and devastating disruptions to the global economy, public health, and all aspects of our lives,” said Vice President Gore. “However, we have also seen the global community’s incredible ability to come together to solve an existential threat, while working toward a recovery guided by a vision for a more resilient future. Together, we can take lessons learned from the pandemic and translate them to ambitious climate solutions centered in community, equity, and opportunity for all.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the scope and scale of devastation created by a truly global emergency, illustrating why efforts to mitigate the climate crisis are more important than ever. Even as air pollution levels and carbon emissions have recently seen temporary reductions around the world, 2020 is still on track to be the warmest year on record. Failing to simultaneously address the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic could have catastrophic impacts on public health, the environment, and our collective future.

The Climate Reality Project is moving its Climate Reality Leadership Corps training online to ensure that people around the globe can continue to participate in the movement safely and effectively. Even with the threat of COVID-19 at our doors, we must continue to advance climate action and urge leaders to prioritize a green and equitable recovery.

Trainees will take part in a rigorous virtual program, including keynotes from Al Gore and others, virtual panel discussions, small group conversations, and learning exercises that explore the links between the climate crisis and public health, rebuilding economies with green jobs and clean energy, and the importance of ensuring a just, low-carbon transition centered in human rights and social justice. After the training, participants will be able to apply what they’ve learned by completing acts of leadership that spread awareness, drive action, and support solutions to the climate crisis.

Since 2006, Climate Reality has trained more than 21,000 Climate Reality Leaders from 154 countries. Past in-person trainings have been held in Tokyo, Japan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Brisbane, Australia; Atlanta, Georgia; Los Angeles, California; Berlin, Germany; Mexico City, Mexico; Manila, Philippines; Miami, Florida; Toronto, Canada; New Delhi, India; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Climate Reality has 10 branch offices around the world and approximately 130 local chapters throughout the United States.
