Schools for a better Climate

On March 1st 2010, Climate Reality Canada launched a nationwide presentation tour  with the objective of reaching over 50,000 students in high schools and elementary schools across Canada. The tour promotes the "Green your School Challenge", a call to action aimed at sparking innovation and leadership amongst Canadian youth. Presentations are delivered by Climate Leaders all personally trained by ex-US Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore. These presentations not only provide a basic scientific overview of climate change and the various contributors of green house gas emissions, but will also showcase sustainable initiatives in schools across Canada.

  The Presentation

  In total over 250 presentations have been given in high schools and elementary schools across Canada, reaching more than 70,000 students. Our Climate Leaders, in addition to our dedicated staff, have created a presentation specifically designed for high school students that is entertaining as well as thought provoking and inspiring. These presentations focus on four main segments: the science behind climate change, solutions to the climate crisis, current trends, and support for sustainable initiatives.

Science

In every audience there is a varying degree of knowledge of the science behind climate change. Climate Reality Canada ensures that every presentation includes some background climate science. This makes certain that every audience member understands the basics behind climate change.

Solutions

During the solutions portion of the presentation, audience members are given the tools necessary to prevent or combat climate change. From simple household solutions to more elaborate and creative projects - Climate Reality Canada stresses the importance of adopting a sustainable lifestyle. The presentations also showcase what other schools, businesses and communities are doing to go green.

Current Trends

In the current trends portion of the presentation, our Climate Leaders highlight what secondary students are accomplishing in their schools and communities across Canada. From creating green clubs, to composting, to installing solar panels, this section is meant to inspire and encourage students to create their own sustainable projects and challenge them to go above and beyond their peers.

Support

To conclude the presentation, Climate Reality Canada can provide audience members with valuable resources and information on different grants available to Canadians for green projects, names of prominent ENGO's, volunteer opportunities for youth, and environmental camps that they can visit through the summer months.

  After a presentation has been requested, each school is invited to share their own solutions and success stories with us. These could be added to our next presentations in all Canadian schools!

Our Goal

Climate Reality Canada hopes to not only further spread awareness on national and global climate issues, but to create young environmental leaders. We hope to inspire the youth of today, to empower them and give them the confidence and knowledge on how to make a difference in the world. We believe that students at the high school level are passionate, engaged, and can accomplish incredible feats. Climate change is a pressing issue and high school students hold the key to a healthier, more sustainable planet for themselves and for future generations.
