About
Peter Schiefke is one of Canada’s foremost advocates for climate change education and action. A graduate of McGill University Peter has worked extensively in Canada and abroad in the realm of sustainable development. As the Executive Director of a non-profit volunteer organization he co-founded in 2004, Peter trained and supervised hundreds of volunteers in Northern Uganda to assist in the reconstruction the war-torn Gulu community using only sustainable methods to ensure harmony with the people and the ecosystem.
During his 4 years in East Africa, he witnessed the impacts of extreme weather events such as droughts and severe flooding, an experience that motivated him to work to fight climate change. Upon his return to his native Montreal, Peter co-founded Youth Action Canada, an organization that encouraged Canadian students to become more active in fighting climate change in their communities. The crowning achievement of Youth Action Canada was a summit on climate change held in the spring of 2007 entitled “Less Talk, More Action”. The conference drew over 5,000 participants from eastern Canada and featured for the first time together, keynote speakers Nobel Laureate Al Gore and Dr. David Suzuki.
In the spring of 2008 Peter was selected as a trainee of Al Gore and wasted no time taking the message to Canadians. His conferences and presentations have taken across the country where he has spoken at over 40 universities to thousands of students. He is currently the Director of The Climate Reality Project Canada and is the Co-Chair of the Road to Rio+20 Committee.
Peter’s work has garnered him numerous awards and distinctions including the Minister of Veteran’s Affairs Commendation, and the Forces Avenir Award for Peace Justice and Humanitarian Affairs.
